'Korean Wave' Star Choi Ji-woo Launches Asian Campaign

Choi Ji-woo, the 29-year old actress who is popular in China and Japan for her role in the 2002 drama “Winter Love Song,” will begin her charm-attack on the Asian market in earnest with her new SBS television drama special, “Stairway to Heaven.”
Choi, returning to TV screens after a two year break following Winter Love Song, is cast as Han Jeong-seo, the female lead, and with her eye-watering performance, she is becoming the most popular actress on television, with an average of 30 percent of TV viewers tuning in to her show. Japan’s Fuji TV and NHK, as well as Taiwanese and Hong Kong TV stations, are already betting big on imports of Stairway to Heaven.
Choi will leave for her “Asian Tour” once Stairway to Heaven finishes in February. In the middle of February, she will spend three days and two nights in Shanghai to take part in announcing the production of “Paekhan-beonjjae Propose,” a drama jointly produced by Korea and China.
After the holding of the opening ceremony for her official Japan fan club on March 20, to be attended by about 500 people, Choi will go to Tokyo to promote NHK’s public TV broadcast of Winter Love Song. NHK had shown Winder Love Song on its satellite cable network, but on May 1, it will broadcast the drama on public TV for the first time.
On April 20, Choi will jump back to Shanghai to show off her magnificent figure for a fashion show sponsored by Korea’s most famous fashion designer, Andre Kim. She also plans to take the stage with Kwon Sang-u, her screen counterpart in Stairway to Heaven.
Choi will spend summer and fall in Korea filming movies and a mini-series. In December, she will end her Asian campaign in Hong Kong, where she is to have a part in the movie “Yokiko.” Tentatively cast aside popular Hong Kong actor Jin Cheng-wu (Takeshi Kaneshiro), Choi has been guaranteed W1 billion from the project, making her one of Asia’s top stars.
Jang Jin-uk of Siders HQ, the promotional agency to which Choi is attached, expressed hope that Stairway to Heaven could generate a second “Choi Ji-woo” craze.
